Vestibular Rehabilitation

Physical Therapy can be used to treat a range of diseases, including dysfunction of the vestibular system (the inner ear, eyes and brain), which present with symptoms like dizziness.  Vestibular rehabilitation can treat vertigo with more than a 90% success rate.  Vertigo is the sensation of spinning or movement while stationary. It is commonly associated with a spinning sensation, light-headedness, nausea or vomiting, unsteadiness, falls and difficulty walking. There are many causes of vertigo, your MD and Physical Therapist are trained to identify the cause.

Some common types of vertigo are:

• Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
• Meniere’s Disease
• Cervicogenic Vertigo
• Vestibular Hypofunction, due to another underlining co-morbidity

The vestibular organs of the inner ear provide the brain with information about changes in head movement. If the vestibular system is not functioning properly, dizziness, vertigo, imbalance and spatial disorientation can occur.
